A lab scanner is an enclosed desktop unit that scans a plaster cast, impression or wax model under controlled lighting. Because scanning conditions are constant — no saliva, no patient movement, no space constraints — final accuracy is higher than intraoral scanning.
Where the accuracy matters most
This precision shows up most in two situations: full-arch cases, where cumulative error across the arch is critical, and multi-unit implant work, where even a small deviation in scan body position causes non-passive seating. For a lab processing several casts a day into the digital workflow, a desktop scanner is faster and more cost-effective than an intraoral scanner.
