Zirconia Shade Selection: Why the Final Color Differs from the Guide

Shade should also be selected under standard lighting, not workshop light.

When a restoration comes out of the furnace and its color doesn't match the shade guide, one of these four factors is usually the culprit.

1. Liquid stain concentration and soak time

The color of white zirconia is built by letting liquid stain penetrate the porous structure of the green-stage restoration. Soak time and liquid concentration directly determine the intensity of the final shade.

A common mistake: using a stain liquid that has been diluted repeatedly or left open too long. Its concentration drifts and the result stops being repeatable. For professional work, keep the liquid fresh.

2. Incomplete drying before sintering

If a stained restoration goes into the furnace completely dry, the color sets evenly. Residual moisture causes blotching and uneven color — especially in thicker areas.

Don't cut the drying time short, even when a case is urgent.

3. Sintering cycle

Temperature and heating ramp have a direct effect on the final color. A fast cycle run on the wrong grade doesn't just reduce strength — it can also dull or shift the color.

If your restorations' colors are shifting for no clear reason, check the furnace program and temperature accuracy before blaming the stain liquid.

4. Blank orientation in a multilayer disc

In a multilayer blank, the color gradient is defined at a specific height. If the restoration is nested at the wrong height, the darker zone ends up where the incisal edge should be, or vice versa.

Practical tip: take the shade under the right light

Part of a "color mismatch" doesn't happen in the lab at all — it happens at the initial shade-taking step. Operatory lighting, lab lighting and daylight each give a different result.

Color scanners that work without powder capture the true color of the tissue, which makes communication between clinic and lab more precise — one reason color scanning makes a real difference in aesthetic cases.
